Protect your children from the web's darker side.
The 'Net's a neat resource for kids - a combination playground, encyclopedia, and clubhouse - but there are also hidden dangers. There's no form of complete protection, but as a parent, there are steps you can take.
If your children are too young to type or change computer settings, they can't use email, newsgroups or chat rooms without your assistance. Even very young children can learn to browse web pages. Try bookmarking child-friendly web directories.
For older children, software products can block access to questionable web sites. Sometimes they can also control what children see in newsgroups, email or chat rooms. In some cases, though, these products block useful web sites. And there's also a chance that computer-smart kids can find a way to defeat the restrictions imposed by the software.
Another option is the use of parental monitoring software. Rather than blocking questionable materials, it provides a log of the web pages, newsgroup articles, and chat rooms that children have accessed. They're still subject to defeat by ingenious teens.
