Line Repair

If your phone isn't working, follow these simple steps to isolate the problem and determine what to do. You could save the expense of an unnecessary repair call.

  • If all your phones are out, the problem may be in the line outside your home or business. Plug a working telephone into the network interface (usually a gray box attached to the outside of your home or office.) If the phone doesn't work, call Coastal Communications at 611 or 876-8202. It is our responsibility to maintain and repair the telecommunications network outside your home or business.

  • If the phone works, the problem is inside your premises. You are responsible for maintaining the line inside your premises, beginning at the network interface on the outside of your home or business. Damage from lightning strikes and other sources can be costly to repair - unless you have the Inside Wire Maintenance service plan. With this plan, if you ever need repairs, we'll send a skilled technician quickly to fix the wiring or jacks at no additional charge*. This plan does not cover telephones and equipment. Maintenance needs should be referred to the retailer or manufacturer.

  • Unplug one at a time all computers, answering machines, and cordless phones. (Electrical surges caused by lightning can damage these devices causing them to short out your line.) Try your other phones. If they work, you have isolated the problem to one of the devices you unplugged.

  • If a phone works in one jack but not in another, the problem may be with your inside wiring or the other jack. You can call us to fix the problem or you can fix it yourself. If you have Inside Wire Maintenance, we will fix it free.

  • If a phone is out but another phone works in the same jack, the problem may be in your telephone itself. Contact the manufacturer or the retailer from whom you purchased the phone.

*You must have had IWM for at least 30 days to receive free repairs. Tampering with inside wiring voids the maintenance contract.
